Theatre Green Book UK announces ambitious future plans

We are delighted to share plans for the Theatre Green Book UK, the grassroots initiative that sets common standards for sustainable theatre.

A number of the organisations involved in its creation have come together as an unincorporated association to give the project more stability and resources – and most importantly to ensure that this vital tool will remain both up to date and free to use for the theatre sector.

We are pleased to be on the Steering Group alongside the three national theatres, Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT), Society of London Theatre/UK Theatre, authors Paddy Dillon and Lisa Burger and Buro Happold. We have also taken on the role of Secretariat for the project.

Theatre Green Book UK will continue to draw on the expertise of theatre-makers from around the UK, including through three committees drawn from practitioners across all disciplines covering Productions, Buildings and Operations, which will engage with the wider sector and support the work of the Steering Group.

The ambition for Theatre Green Book UK is for all theatres in the UK to achieve Theatre Green Book baseline standards across buildings operations and productions by the end of 2026. To support this, a new version of the book will be published in summer 2024 along with a range of tools and trackers to help theatres progress on their journey to sustainability.
