Spotlight on Corporate Partner: Unusual Rigging

Unusual Rigging has completed the installation of a new load-bearing steel grid at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre following a 12-week programme of works carried out during the summer.

A five-person team removed the existing timber grid and installed a new steel structure incorporating 32.5 tonnes of steel. The project was delivered in collaboration with Maltby Surveys, whose point cloud survey informed the design process undertaken by Unusual Rigging’s in-house team.

Alongside the grid installation, Unusual completed structural strengthening and repair works and upgraded the venue’s existing fly system, which includes 55 counterweight sets and 12 motorised sets originally installed by the company in 2003.

The new grid was put to use when Unusual Rigging returned to the theatre at the end of September to provide rigging solutions for Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
