Billingham Forum Theatre

Combining a sports centre and a theatre on a shared site, Billingham Forum was the first multi-use leisure destination of its kind when it opened in 1968.

Theatres Trust became involved in 2003 when we were asked by Stock-on-Tees Borough Council to comment on a structural appraisal of this theatre and leisure complex, following proposals to demolish it and replace it with a supermarket. We objected strongly to the proposals and along with the Twentieth Century Society, submitted a successful application to have the theatre listed.

This protection saved the theatre and the council instead started on the necessary repair work that was needed, before going on to refurbish it. The theatre has continued to be a popular local venue.

More recently, we were happy to support its planning application to install solar panels above the complex, reducing energy costs and improving the Forum’s environmental sustainability without detracting from its appearance.
