The Landmark
How Theatres Trust supported a coastal town's new theatre
Dispelling the myth that Theatres Trust’s work is all about Victorian theatres, is our involvement with The Landmark theatre in Ilfracombe.
With its distinctive twin conical design, The Landmark is a bold, modern addition to the Devon coastal town and one of its more recognisable features, truly deserving of the name ‘landmark’.
The theatre opened in May 1998 with Theatres Trust supporting the project from the outset.
Ilfracombe’s previous theatre, the Victoria Pavilion was badly damaged by a storm in 1990. Rather than oppose plans for its demolition, Theatres Trust was on board with the idea of a new venue, praising the local authority’s ‘imaginative and energetic leadership’ and supporting plans for the distinctive venue we now know and love as The Landmark.
This case study was produced as part of our Fifty@50 campaign to mark our 50th anniversary in 2026.
