Looking back at how Theatres Trust has supported Sherman Theatre over the years

Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre is a leading producing house and major civic centre that also holds the distinction of being Wales’s first Theatre of Sanctuary. The theatre works with artists, performers, and communities across South Wales to champion Welsh language theatre and helps to develop, produce, and present new writing by Wales-based theatre makers and playwrights.

In 2007, Sherman Theatre and Sgript Cymru joined forces and became Sherman Cymru, a theatre devoted to producing and presenting both English and Welsh language works and home to Wales’s only dedicated bilingual Literary Department.

Over the years we’ve supported Sherman Theatre with expert and impartial advice on operations and building maintenance. Most recently we’ve helped with funding through our grant programmes.

Last year we supported the theatre with a £20k grant through our Theatres Improvement Scheme in association with the Wolfson Foundation. The funding went towards the theatre’s ongoing project to transition from tungsten lighting to more energy efficient and cost-effective LEDs. Not only does this improve sustainability but it also helps to protect the theatre against the increased costs of tungsten lamp repair while providing lighting designers with more flexibility in their designs – a great outcome for the environment, artists, and audiences alike.
