Salford Victoria up for sale at auction

Theatres Trust responds to news that the Theatre at Risk is up for sale.

Salford Victoria has been put up for sale at auction by its current private owner.

Unfortunately, the auction listing describes the site as an ‘exciting development opportunity’ and fails to mention the responsibilities and restrictions that come with owning a Grade II listed building.

There is an active community group Salford Victoria Theatre Trust (SVTT) who has been working to find a way for the building to be revived for its community, which we have been supporting. Salford City Council has also been supportive of this work.

Salford Victoria is an important heritage building, which Theatres Trust believes has the potential to be returned to community use. We share the aims of the SVTT in creating a sustainable future for the building and hope to work with any new owner to ensure that any plans for the building respect its architectural significance and importance for the community.

Update 28 November

The wording on the auction site has now been amended.

Update 9 December

Salford Victoria failed to sell at auction. We are continuing to talk to all interested parties about the future of the building.
