Arts Council England review

Theatres Trust responds to the independent review of Arts Council England by Baroness Margaret Hodge.

Theatres Trust welcomes the findings of the independent review into Arts Council England and its recognition of the important role an arms-length development agency has to play in ensuring the arts, an international success story, can thrive.

Amongst a raft of sensible suggestions on funding, we were particularly heartened to see the recommendation that it should be “a statutory duty for local government to prepare a cultural strategy every 5 years.”

Local authorities have a crucial role to play in creating the conditions that the arts need to flourish, and ensuring each local area has a strategic and forward-facing cultural plan will ensure theatres up and down the country can thrive.

Theatres Trust wholeheartedly endorses that specific recommendation, and urges the government to adopt it.
