How Theatres Trust's support helped secure the future of an important West End Theatre

Home of blockbuster musicals and other spectacles, the Dominion on Tottenham Court Road is a well-established part of London’s Theatreland and you’d be forgiven for thinking that its place was always so assured. But in 1989, there was a real risk that one of the UK’s largest theatres could have been lost forever.

The theatre’s then owner planned to demolish the Dominion to make way for a hotel and office space. Theatres Trust led the campaign to protect the theatre, rallying support from across the theatre sector. Camden Council turned down the planning application, although it later went to Public Appeal. Thankfully in 1990 the appeal was rejected and the theatre saved.

Since 2009, the Dominion has been owned and operated by Nederlander, who has extensively and sensitively restored and updated the theatre. We’ve been happy to support these works over the years, to ensure this grand theatre can continue to contribute to the vibrancy of the West End.
